Our Roots
We’re glad you’re here - we’d love to tell you a little bit about Root and Splendor!
In pursuit of a simpler lifestyle, my family and I decided to move into a rural community outside of San Diego, CA. The vision for the move was to have space for our 4 lively boys to be outside, barefoot and dirty, and a chance to slow down and try some homesteading, a chance to slow down to enjoy each other, growing in our faith and friendships. As we settled in, we added some animals to roam alongside the barefoot children, including dogs, pet pigs, chickens, and barn cats (with the dream of adding an alpaca one day). Choosing this lifestyle felt right and we re-discovered our roots in the process.
By living a more natural lifestyle, I began learning about all the toxins found in the most common household products. Going back to my roots, and not being able to find any true, high-quality products with integrity, I began researching and crafting various home and body products for our personal use.
During this research, I discovered some disappointing information - natural does not necessarily mean safe. (Think poison ivy/oak: it's natural, but you won't go rub it on your body! This is the same for many natural ingredients used throughout the industries). As I faced mountains of dirty laundry that my family produced, I knew we needed better. Working alongside chemists and scientists that adhered to our values, we begin formulating. On this homestead is where Root and Splendor began.
The Splendor
Our purpose: As a family and brand, we are passionate about intentionality, our faith, the outdoors, a cleaner and simpler lifestyle, and helping others. We do not waiver in our commitment to bring you products of integrity that are transparent, all natural & safe, powerfully effective, and all in sustainable packaging.
Our name and logo: Just as the quality of the soil at the root of the plant impacts how well it grows and flourishes, we believe our bodies and minds are similar. Whether it’s physical, emotional, spiritual, relational - what you put into and feed your roots matters. Here, from our healthy roots, is where we grow and experience splendor.
Our process: All of our products are made in Southern California. We formulate alongside chemists and scientists to create the safest, most effective, natural products available. Our laundry essentials are 3rd party lab tested for premium efficacy. We love being in relationship with you; we include a handwritten notes in each and every order that leaves our door.
Our ingredients:
~Transparency: We believe you should know about each ingredient in the products you use, therefore we are fully transparent. You will always know what is in each of our products.
~Plant-based Ingredients and no harsh chemicals: Each of our ingredients is sourced from nature. There are no synthetic ingredients in our formulas and zero harsh chemicals.
~Safer for people and planet ingredients: Natural ingredients is NOT the same things as safe ingredients. An unknown fact is that many natural ingredients can still have negative health effects including damaging our reproductive, respiratory, endocrine, cardiovascular systems, and more. Therefore, each of Root and Splendor’s ingredients is not just natural, but is also safe for people, the environment, waterways. We reference various databases to ensure each ingredient is accepted as safe.
~Enzymes: Enzymes are the hero ingredients of our products. While other brands leave all or some enzymes out of formulas, we use 5 different types of enzymes in our laundry essentials. Enzymes are necessary for true odor and stain removal, and cleaning beneath the surface of clothes. Leaving them out of formulas will leave odors and stains untouched. Plant-based miracles and working at the microfiber level, enzymes deeply clean clothes while also softening clothes, brightening colors, and whitening whites.
~Ultra-concentrated with no water: Sustainability is the driving force of all that we do. While other brands have up to 90% water in their formulas, we have zero added water in our laundry detergent. Water is bulky and not eco-friendly, but it’s also a precious resource – our washing machines add plenty of water for us so there was no need to add water into our formulas. In fact, our ultra concentrated liquid Laundry Detergent only requires 1 Tablespoon (1/2 fl oz), and no dilution, per load to get our premium clean. Simply use 2 Tablespoons (1 fl oz) for a large or heavily soiled load.
~Scent profile of pure and natural essential oils: Fragrance is one of the leading culprits of dangers to our health, but we all love great smelling laundry. Available in 4 different blends, our scent profile is made with pure and natural essential oils that leave your laundry smelling clean and amazing. Again, we are transparent about each of the oils we use, to ensure you know exactly what you are getting.
Our packaging: Eco-friendly and Sustainable packaging: We chose a bag-in-box and bag-in-bottle design for our laundry essentials to be more environmentally friendly. The bag on the inside is recyclable, while the outside is compostable or recyclable. In addition, when looking at the full life cycle (how it’s made, stored, transported, used, and where it ends up), this packaging provides an 800% reduction in carbon footprint compared to a rigid plastic jug.
Our sustainability efforts:
~Refill options: All of our products are available in large, bulk sizes. for instance, our laundry detergent ranges in sizes from 1 L (67 loads of laundry) up to 3 L or 202 loads. In addition, we partner with hundreds of low waste, bulk refill stores around the country. These independently run local stores, carry our products in bulk and you can fill up your own container over and over again, totally eliminating the need for a single use container. This refill process is not only better for the environment, but also saves you money as you are not purchasing the cost of the packaging over and over again. ~Closed-loop: When our refill partners purchase in us from bulk, we take back their empty containers, refill them ourselves, and send them back again. We try to keep items in use and out of recycling and landfills as long as possible.
Our storefront: In addition to shipping all over the United States, we have a storefront where you can come fill and refill your favorite Root and Splendor products, but also shop in our Sustainable Marketplace for a variety of eco-friendly and sustainable home and body products, including toothpaste, floss, reusable bags, deodorants, and more. Our impact: We take pride in being a socially conscious company. This means that we aim to source our ingredients and packaging from companies with fair trade standards. We are also committed to giving to our community and enjoy donating to various causes. Our charity of choice, and a portion of our profits, goes to Safe Families for Children – a national and local not-for-profit ministry fueled by compassion to keep children safe and families intact. At Safe Families, regular people, like you and me, temporarily host children in crisis, as voluntary requested by the biological parents, outside of any government regulations, to give the children a safe place to sleep and to help bring community to the family, breaking the chains of isolation and despair.
